This was my project for the 2003 National Novel Writing Month.

The Podkayne Fire underwent several reconfigurations.

The final incarnation is about an elderly woman and her desire to commit suicide with the cover-up (for insurance) help of her granddaughter and friend.

After NaNo November 2003, I had written 77,825 words. After NaNoEdMo March 2004, I ended up with 81,493-including revisions.

{Note: This is the original excerpt from mid-November 2003--unedited.}

Theresa had driven on 18th St nearly every day since the day she got her license.
Originally to school, the stadium and work at Burger Time, now it was to graduate classes and her internship at the radio station. In all the time of driving up from Pierce across the flat three blocks and continuing down the windy roundabout to Hamilton, she had never paid much attention to the level four-plex on the middle block.
Until the day Theresa was stopped behind a bus and saw a woman holding a gun under her chin.

Theresa could recall every detail.
The snow-delayed school bus had been taking its time. The stop sign was flashing from the driver's side and Theresa was looking around to kill time. She had briefly glanced over the woman along with the rest of the right side of the street. Having finished with the left side, she had been taking another flicker at the right when her brain registered what she actually saw.

The woman appeared to be in her sixties. She wore a flower-printed dress and nurses shoes. A loosely pinned, half-blown off scarf hung from her short, barely grey brownish hair. She sat very still aside from the significant black metal gun shaking in her hand. She looked straight up at the sky.

Theresa's only thought was hope that she could get to the woman in time...
